Didn't someone say war is a nasty business? Quite good for promotion though.

The office of Rathlin's new kommandant was an imposing room, to say the least. Once a small, private courtroom used on the rare occasion that two criminal trials were occuring at once, it still held a foreboding air felt by all those who ever walked up to the witness stand. The large window behind the stand actually let in little light as it faced Wethersby Hill, which blocked the sunlight from spreading over the building during most of the day, so the office was lit only by a few lamps scattered over the area, casting everything into long shadow. The space that a small audience of ten open chairs had once occupied was now clear, and the worn carpet of the old floor taken up and replaced by dark wood. As the new occupant of this room was not, as he had vehemently insisted, a judge, the stand beneath the long desk where the kommandant did his work had been removed so the desk was of normal height (something that had disappointed many of his aides, who wanted the Baron to appear superior to all visitors through an elevated seat), but despite the kommandant's intentions, the desk still gave the impression of being taller as it had been built to dominate a courtroom's attention.
Oberst Baron Karl von Fuchs, the new owner of this office, pushed back his light brown hair as he sat back in his chair, staring wearily at the long letter he had been writing. He really should save this for tomorrow--it was getting late, and it had been a long day spent reading the enormous packet of official papers and orders from the Reichsfuhrer that had been brought by the new SS sturmbannfuhrer. What was his name again...? Franz von Hynkel. Yes. An enthusiast, to say the least, to ein Reich, ein volk, und ein Fuhrer. [one Reich, one people, and one Leader] Just as Karl himself was supposed to be, although perhaps not to that extent.
When the back office door opened without a knock, Karl knew who it was without looking up--only his chief of staff, Hauptmann Fritz Kellermann, would dare enter without permission from any door, especially the back, which was a private one used for his close officer staff only. His officers knew how much he liked his privacy and had a healthy respect for that, but Fritz was an exception as a fellow veteran of the Eighth Panzer Division and Karl's best friend. Still, it was a little late for interruptions either way.
"Sorry to disturb you, sir," Kellermann said quickly, walking the few paces to the desk, his steps agitated. Surprised by both his mood and the fact that he had slipped back into formal terms as they usually slipped into first-name terms privately, the oberst looked up expectantly, raising an eyebrow.
"What's the problem, Fritz?" he asked mildly, gathering up the stack of papers on his desk and sliding them into his filing drawer.
His chief-of-staff's narrow, dark face was grim, his usual smile vanished. "You're never going to believe this, sir, but an American soldier's washed up on the beach. A patrol found him an hour ago and are having him brought over now--I guess you're our Foreign Affairs minister for now. We were expecting someone from Berlin in a week, but..."
Karl blinked. "An American soldier?"
"Jawohl, Herr Oberst."
"Scheiss," Rathlin's kommandant swore wonderingly. "And I thought I'd had an interesting day as it is. Mein Gott, this is going to complicate things, isn't it? With the United States' neutrality in the fragile state it is anyway, and seeing as we have a closed border..."
"I know, sir," Fritz sighed, dropping into the chair on the opposite side of the desk and rubbing his temples. "D'you want me to get on a line to Berlin? If the U.S. finds out about this business, there's going to be hell to pay, and we don't have the right people to figure this out."
After a pause in which he considering their options, Karl shook his head decisively. "No. Not yet. I want to meet him. Bring him here immediately, and have any avalible officers come as well. We'll see what's happened before we report this to Berlin."
With a nod, his chief-of-staff saluted and clicked his heels smartly, turning and hurrying out the door to carry out his commanding officer's orders. Karl swept his desk clean hurriedly and replaced his peaked officer's hat, drawing the brim low around his eyes so his face was cast into shadow, reflecting the mood of his surroundings as he waited for the arrival of those he had called for.
It appeared his long day was not over yet by any means.

Von Hynkel drank hot milk and beer. He would not have taken any alcohol, but the Fuhrer said that beer was a good German drink, so he always had one at night. It had been a frustrating day. He had taken those soft Wehrmacht troops on a 20 kilometer run, and he had to coax them into the last chorus of "Deutchland Uber Alles!" on the way back. Weak, that's what they were. Not a pure Aryan among them; too much Slav blood. Ah, what will become of our pure race!
As he was leaving the English pub, definitely a come down from a beer hall, one of his SS men came with a note.
"Baron von Fuchs requests your presence at his headquarters, sir."
"Ja! What does he want?"
"Rumor has it that an American has been captured. Armed and in uniform, Sir!"
"An American?!!"
"Jawohl, Sir."
What luck, von Hynkel thought. Almost too good to be true. Decadent America; the land of democracy, an outdated political system. Filled with weak, soft, mongrel-raced capitalists. Perhaps von Fuchs will let me interogate him! Von Hynkel thought. Wouldn't that be terrific; give the American a taste of a real Superman!
He rushed out of the door, failed to pay his bill (again, but what could the proprietor say?--inferior cur), and ran to von Fuch's headquarters.
Bursting into his office, von Hynkel threw up his right arm in a Nazi salute. "Heil Hitler, mein Oberst!"
"I understand an American spy has been apprehended. How may I assist you in crushing his spirit, Herr Oberst?!"

Valdemar was walking briskly to the Military Offices, his thoughts in something of a jumble, his information was still fairly basic, one of his men had been present when the american was apprehended but he had only been able to garner a few facts, the american had been armed, he had looked as if he had been through a rough time, and he was picked up on one of the more isolated beaches. Then, not long after the incident had been reported, the Kommandant requested his presence down here. To make matters worse, the uber-fanatical ss leader would surely be there, bulling his way twards the torture chanber before the more subtle, and more effective means of interrogation had been persued. this is going to be a long night he thought, as he opened the extirior door and made his way to the Kommandant's office. once there, his expression went almost imperceptibly sour, and he saluted his fellow officers , nodding to each, "Kommandant, Sturmbannführer. " he then waited to see how the kommandant wished them to proceed

Von Hynkel gave the Nazi "Heil-Hitler" salute with verve. All his fellow officerswere there: Valdemar, von Fuchs, and the lot.
"Gentlemen, we are fortunate, I understand, to have captured an American provocateur, an insurrectionist, undoubtedly sent here to organize resistance among the people against us. He was armed, when apprehended, and our response must be clear and decisive. "With your permission, herr Baron, I will interrogate the suspect until he informs us about the details of his plan: whatever contacts he has among the populace, the exact nature of his orders, his supply lines, whether he has been in contact with the English."
Von Hynkel paused for effect and to gauge the impact of his decisive plan of action. "Of course, when we are through with him, we will shoot him publicly. This should send the proper signals to the civilian populace. It will also warn the Americans that no one, especially a weak decadent nation like theirs, should dare cross our magnificent Fuhrer. Heil Hitler!!!"
He always tried to control himself when discussing such stimulating topics, but the tone of his voice rose just a touch, his hands quivered, and a slight trace of spittle flecked his uniform at this last line. He couldn't help himself. This would be so much fun!

Valdemar stepped in as soon as Von Hynkel finished speaking, "with all due respect, Herr Sturmbannführer i belive that the initial interrogation is my perogitive as i represent the intellegence service and there is clearly much to be learned from the american, additionally, while i do not belive that the americans would commit themselves over one man, they are hardly s stable or rational as we, so the well-being of their officer must be handled carefully. For all we know at the present time he could be a torist, albiet a strange one, or a plant from the english, having nothing to do with the US. " he said it in an even, and reasonable tone, as much to convince the baron as to placate the overenthusiastic Sturmbannführer and he hoped that it would prevent the ss leader from inflaming the delicate situation Too much. he turned to the kommandant, "I strongly advise caution"

[OOC] Sorry...
[BIC] Karl's grip tightened almost inperceptibly on the pencil he was fiddling with at the SS man's disgustingly eager suggestion of torture. The kommandant had just about had it with von Hynkel--the sturmbannführer was a menace to the whole operation on Rathlin. Left to his own devices, he would have the entire island turned into one of those concentration camps civilians murmured rumours about by the end of the week.
Jaeger, however, was a different matter. Former SS or no, he knew what he was about--although not on the best of terms with the Abwehr, Karl would readily admit that they knew their business, and he was already beginning to like how the other sturmbannführer thought. He also took the initiative even in the intimidating face of von Hynkel, a quality the Wehrmacht oberst approved of. The more Sturmbannführer von Hynkel was put in his place, the better--the man had not yet realized that he was not in command here, vastly supreme member of the Aryan race or no.
"You forget yourself, Sturmbannführer von Hynkel," Karl said as politely as possible. The old scar slashing across his temple and down his cheek was throbbing painfully in his suppressed anger, and the kommandant rubbed it absently as he stood, meeting the tall man's regulation-blue eyes levelly. "We are not at war with the United States--not yet, anyway," he added wryly. "The...method of dealing with him you are suggesting may just start one, and however eager your superiors in Berlin may be into seeing that conflict come about, I've been ordered to maintain order on this island in any way I see fit. Bringing a world power into this war is not my idea of keeping the peace." Perhaps the snub about the SS command had been going a bit far, but Karl didn't particularly care anymore--although he didn't look it, he was growing angrier by the moment.
"I strongly suggest caution," Jaeger put in, his cold features near expressionless. Karl nodded his agreement slowly.
"Exactly." Von Fuchs' mismatched eyes glanced pointedly at the younger of the two sturmbannführers in attendance. "He's on his way here as we speak--I want to get the full story from him first. Seeing as our countries are, as I said, not at war, I predict no problem with that arrangement." However, a steely glint had found a way into his eyes, firmly declaring that if there was in fact a problem, the American might find life less along the lines he was describing after all.

Jaeger breathed an internal sigh of relief as the Kommandant agreed with his assessment. Even so he could see that this was only the beginning of a power struggle that was likely to continue for as long as the three of them remained on the island. the kommandant would have to give in to Von Hynkel at some point, either because he supported his approch on whatever the issue was, or just to attempt to placate him. Von Hynkel was also the sort to take rash action, and Valdemar's mind shuttered away from what the situation would have been if the sturmbannführer had been the one to first discover the american. Gott sei dank that had not occured. Perhaps he should invite the ss rep to his suite for dinner and see if he could reason with him, not tonight certainly but it might even work... he dragged his thoughts back to the present "There is no objection to my request to question him first?" he asked the Kommandant
